You're about 48 years late on catching up on this development Sam_XR6. Where do you think most modern car design comes from - and peoples' expectation of how a car should handle? This thrashed the American-based Holdens and Falcons at Mt Panorama in the 1960s and after about another yawning 35 years Holdens and Falcons finally started to achieve something vaguely similar in terms of handling (for a RWD).

I must say though, most FWDs on the market now, though based on this concept, couldn't achieve anything like this sort of handling.

Don't forget Mini's "Won Bathurst" in 1966 , (last non-turbo 4 cyl to win).

I'll have to copy a Video my Bro-in Law has got , He had just rebuilt his old Mini and "light-weighted" the new one too much . For those of you who know Oran Park , he became "Airborne" over the Dog-leg and flipped the Mini "8" times End Over End ! : (has Video to prove it) and ended up in the hollow before the Straight .

This is the car he had to replace because the body had Fatigued , the new car had the same front mechanical's but Titanium rear end . They were amazing little car's , Only place the V8's could beat them was on the straights . As you can see in the video (above) they handle like they were "on Rails"

Amazing what the New Mini's look like with a Different paint job ? ? ?

Yup a friend used to race one in Appendix J back in the 80’s/90’s – he’d gone nuts on the engine, the suspension wasn’t as developed as some of the other Minis.

He was up against V8 Falcon Sprints and Mustangs and could still beat them at power circuits like Phillip Island. Anywhere with turns he’d be able to outbrake and outcorner them it was only on the straights that the little 1275cc engine was lacking.

Wasn't trying to show any new developments and wasn't talking about where modern handling comes from....

Just wanted to share a really cool bit of footage. Thought other would enjoy as I did.

Sorry for sharing...

Incredible car control, imagine trying something like that in a Falcon?

Wonder if the Mrs will let me have a crack at a Motorkhana in her Fez....

Sam , Don't be sorry mate, it was my fault for not acknowledging your post (I'm afraid it was very late 1-44am)

Alway's enjoy watching "precision driving" and that Stop at the end was a ripper, couldn't do that with a RWD car . Also , even if the topic "drift's" a little (pun intended ) it's good to discuss the the advantages of other cars' & let's face it , the mini was a Ground Breaking little car . What other car has recently released models so similar to the original 40 odd years later . We wouldn't have discused other things about Mini's if you hadn't posted .

I've got a movie clip (not you-tube) with some "drifting" , that old it's in B&W , also one of SAAB precision driving . If you'd like a copy of them PM me your email and I'll send them to you (got to learn to post them , but I'm on D-up , very slow , Haha) .

Norm

Yes mate , Awsome little car's , Bro-in-Laws car had a 1475cc in it with a twin Weber crossflow head & with 13 x10 wheels on the front . The motor cost him towards the $10,000 mark in 1980 .
