everything about petrol prices is just and explainable except for the weekly price cycle, it's stupid.

The sudden (or extended) rises over public holidays that have been going on since I was a kid really made by blood boil. Doesnt seem to happen these days though.

I don't mind about the higher prices on public holidays. They need to charge more than usual to cover the extra cost of staff time on the public holidays, and i'm sure none of you would be okay with being denied penalty rates on public holidays.

Get real mate!
Supermarkets/shopping centres get more traffic during the holidays (easter/xmas/public holidays) but dont jack their prices up!!! And staff get their penalty rates! |

So one place doesn't do it so none should?
When i go get pizza on public holidays i pay 10% extra When i jump in a cab on a public holiday I pay Tarriff 2 etc But anyway, it doesn't affect me, excise or price cycle are the things only oil-based fuels have to worry about. 44cpl for me! mmm now i want pizza

What can say? I think you mean who can say, and in that case, most people can.

but i dont buy pizza or catch cabs on public holidays.. staff are paid extra cos weekend work or o.t. or whatever reason. that should be employers problem. it's called running a business. NO products should go up during certain times, petrol and pizza included. blatant profiteering! and servos apparently make no money on fuel anyway..indies don't. holidays etc you'd think they'd sell more softdrink/cigs/lollies so why jack up fuel?? cheaper fuel would get more people buying other stuff they don't need at huge mark up..indies aren't as bad but they all do it... and what staff??? most servos have 1, maybe 2 and a computer.....sometimes the staff can't even push that button in under 10 minutes(yes i know that sometimes the previous customer wanders around before paying).. and supermarket chains have a monopoly(almost)now with whatever deals they have with the oil companies.. caltex and shell are always more here without dockets..false economy..or spend $5 dollars in the indie, which gets you 1 bottle of drink, to get the 4c off...spend $5-8 to save maybe $2. more false economy. and logic. woolies are ripping everyone off for groceries too so the $30 gets a couple of meals, to get a docket that saves $2-3 on a tank.. we're getting the rough end of the pineapple, people, and we're all saying "thank you sir! more please!!" |

Places that need extra staff during holiday periods will most certainly make more money due to increased business; its a jib to jack up prices, plain and simple.

Seems like some people in here have never been small business owners and severely overestimate the amount of profit they make. Especially when staffing can be one of your biggest costs!

BIG business' that don't make as much money as they want, jack up prices any way/excuse they can. lay-off's, out-sourceing.....price hikes. everyone whinges about banks; k. rudds car apparently cost him over $200k to run over 6 months(WTF??); anyone out there gonna plug in an extra heater this year??? or run 3 fridges? there are some exceptions, but not many. you have to accept some degrees of this in capitalism, even encourage it. no-one goes into business to lose money..! but outright greed should not be tolerated. actually, the indie servo owner prob'ly suffers most: no fuel profit; bad name from chain servos; shopper dockets stop people doing fill-in shop at local corner servo/store, the indies main source of income. i buy premium ethanol from my local indie(but i admit, never buy groceries..only smokes at 6 in the morn..and occaisional ice-break...). why do we all just accept what is?? australias biggest problem has always been fear of change, and acceptance of whatever rules are laid down for us. those "no fuel days" don't work.. not if everyone fills up the day before, or after!!! DER!!! stop buying from big oil. go out of your way(if you have to, or can)to buy from the indie.. the more indie the better(yes, i know most of 'em are part owned by big oil anyway... the point is to make a point! a permanent point). switch to lpg. write to your mp. write to today tonight. go to aldi...... do what ever. stand up. |

for a boss who respects that, certain compromises can be reached... i usually work for flat rate (labourer): no holidays, sick days, rdo's, loading...... a lot of bosses don't get this, and expect you to run their business for them..my missus in that position right now.. she's lookin else-where, and is gone as soon as she finds something. she's the only one in her office to last more than 3 months cos the boss is a jerk, and he'll be stuffed when she goes, cos shes got a work ethic.. i've done that plenty..(why i'm still a labourer at 38!)...but i get my money, pay my bills, my mortgage, and don't care about bosses problems. unless he's cool. even just a "good job this week" will do it. |

Petrol prices are a fact of life. Smartest thing I do right now is buy petrol and pretend it's 1.50 a litre. That way I'm surprised at the end of the week and can usually put the extra money towards something else.
