No surprises there really, Cruze sales are starting to come back to earth a bit, down to 1318, closer to where it will usually be.

Cruze Sales are down because Holden cannot get stock.

Holden themselves said that the September and October figure will be down but should shoot up again in November.

If you order a Cruze now you will have to wait until January 2010 to get it.

But surely there is not shortage of koreans to bolt them together . Time to crack the whip i reackon.

I did see one the other day it looked pretty average on the road not nearly as good as the photo's

Good to see the Fiesta climbing up now that you can actually get your hands on one , but I thought it would be a 1,500+ kind of car. Seems Ford fail at advertising still

Car sales were down by 3.5 per cent in September, but the market continued to show signs of recovery from its recent slump, with increased sales in some segments.

The September sales figures show a much slower decline than the first eight months of the year, when sales have been down by 14 per cent.

The figures are also markedly better than the United States, where sales were down by roughly a quarter in September.

The improvement was driven by stronger demand from small business buyers, who are eligible for a 50 per cent tax break on vehicle purchases until the end of this year.

Sales to private buyers also proved resilient to the downturn, with figures down only marginally on last September. But the market was dragged down by a continuing slump in Government and rental sales.

The chief executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Andrew McKellar, said the result was “stronger than expected”.

But he warned that the Government risked derailing the recovery with a lift in official interest rates. “There is a risk that a rise in interest rates will undermine any recovery in consumer confidence, which is still quite fragile,” he said.

“We’d see any rise at this stage as entirely premature and counter-productive. I can’t see any justification for it.

“Economic stimulus has resulted in positive business sales but private buyers need the confidence to return to showrooms in larger numbers.”

Luxury four-wheel-drives defied the subdued economic climate, with sales increasing by almost a third last month, driven by new models.

Sales of compact four-wheel-drives, light cars and sports cars also bucked the downward trend But the local carmakers continued to struggle, with sales of locally-made vehicles dropping at almost three times the rate of the rest of the market.

Holden’s new, more fuel efficient Commodore had a quiet first month on sale, regaining the top spot on the sales chart from the Toyota Corolla small car, but dropping 13 per cent on the same month last year.

Ford’s locally built Falcon attracted 10 per cent fewer buyers than last year, while its Territory offroader also recorded a drop in sales. Australia’s only locally built four-cylinder car, the Toyota Camry, recorded a 12 per cent increase in sales, but its six-cylinder sibling, the Aurion dropped 16 per cent.

Budget brand Hyundai continues to make the most of the economic uncertainty, with sales up a staggering 76 per cent as recession-hardened buyers look for a bargain. Mr McKellar said the market remained on target to meet the Chamber’s forecast of 880,000 new car sales in 2009, down about 12 per cent on 2008.

He said the Government tax breaks for small business should generate increased activity in November and December.

NEW Zealand monthly new-vehicle sales topped 7000 units for the first time this year in September, raising hopes that the market is steadying.

While the September tally of 7052 cars and commercial vehicles was still down 17 per cent on the corresponding month last year, the rate of decline does not look too bad when compared with the year-to-date slump of 29.7 per cent for the first three-quarters of 2009.

In fact, last month’s industry total was only 22 per cent down on September 2007’s 9132 units, before the global economic crisis hit.

The previous best sales month of 2009 was January, when the NZ car industry moved 6505 units. Since then it has been mostly downhill, with the volumes creeping above 6000 units in June.

With one quarter to go, the industry total stands at 52,430

New Zealand’s used import market is also steadying, the YTD figure down 32.6 per cent, to 48,514.

Motor Industry Association CEO Perry Kerr said September sales were heartening, but the vehicle market was still vulnerable to current economic conditions.

“The pick-up in the economy is starting to flow through to vehicle sales,” he said. “However, we remain cautious until we see more of a definitive and sustained increase in sales figures.”

Toyota NZ CEO Alistair Davis said the market had found a new level, but numbers would slowly climb back.

“People still need cars, what with our topography and [lack of] public transport – but it won’t be a U-shaped or V-shaped recovery graph – more of a Nike ‘swoosh’ with a slow climb back,” he said.

Toyota rounded out the third quarter by topping the September sales charts with 1864 sales and an overall market share of 26.4 per cent, ahead of Ford (855 sales, 12.1 per cent), Holden (610, 8.6 per cent) and Mazda (549, 7.8 per cent).

Although Toyota sales are down 30.6 per cent YTD, it still leads the 2009 market, with 10,563 sales and a 20.1 per cent share. Ford follows, down 26.1 per cent YTD to 6491, for 12.3 per cent share, and then Holden, down 35.2 per cent to 4851 for 9.2 per cent share, and Mazda, down 24.3 per cent to 4208 for 8.0 share.

Up and coming Hyundai has consolidated fifth place, up 3.4 per cent YTD to 3755 for 7.16 per cent share, while Nissan lies sixth, down 28.5 per cent to 3349 and 6.4 per cent share.

Others in the top ten are Suzuki (2870), Mitsubishi (2393), and Honda (2260).

Year to date, the Toyota Corolla continues as NZ’s best-selling model with sales of 3034 units, ahead of the Holden Commodore (2145) units and Suzuki Swift (1804).

In September, Mitsubishi shot up to fifth place on the back of Triton and Outlander runout ahead of new models in November.

By October, Mitsubishi will have a new managing director after the sudden retirement of John Leighton, with Japan-appointed executive director Mr Inoue acting managing director pending that announcement.

Of the rest, Kia is still trending up, with its newest dealer doubling its Auckland North Shore sales, and new models arrive shortly.

Korean brands have suffered least in terms of currency fluctuation, Japanese brands most.

Premium European brands remained strong in September, while Subaru had a comparatively good month on the back of new diesel Outback, Legacy and Forester models.

i went to westpoint ford again to buy a new territory and michael bramley there told me it would be a 3 month wait cause i wanted 7 seats. is that true? why doesn't ford make more and should i get a kluger? thanks.

The bit in bold is wrong. It is Commodore down 13.5%, Falcon down 10.5%. Makes you wonder sometimes.

They have to make the people think that Holden is in a better position than it really is.

I did notice in the figures that the statesman is down 120 units compared to last year. Interesting when they release news to the public today that they are trying to sell the same car to various U.S. police forces.

yup, there was a supply gap there too i believe... But at the same time they were discounting V6's hard to move them..

As for Cruze it hardly sells better then the 4 year old Astra did this time last year.. I dont know what all the fuss is about, and I don't think the shortage will last forever once people see the quliaty, epica / viva cough cough??

I do have to laugh at the Mondeo sales. I would have loved to see the marketing managers face when he/she saw that all that advertised increased sales by 1!!

I still can't believe there could be that many more stupid people buying a Commodore over a falcon. I also would have thought the fiesta would be selling more by now. But I guess they more than double last years results, so that in itself is a great effect.

While i'm sure Ford would like to see more out of its advertising dollar i think that wasn't a bad result at all. Mondeo has had a price rise since this time last year and overall the market is down. Yet they didn't lose any sales...held steady. In the current market that is a %gain atcually. Fact is the mondeo was never going to set the sales sheats alight. It has very low to bad name recognition, vituall nill fleet sales and private buyers are all over mazda/honda for the badge snobbery.

I think the results aren't too bad for Ford but it continues to be a tough market to get the message out. Hyundai have been so successfull because they have good no-nonsense advertising that appeals to the 'joe public'. Buy our cars, they cost less to buy and operate and are atcually very good (not like they used to be). It works because people don't have much inbuilt perception about Hyundai...except maybe a bit of negative 'cheep and cheerful' reputation from years ago.

Ford is fighting a long held and frankly grossly innacurate view of the company amongs the masses. Yes we have issues (dealer network....) and our cars aren't perfect but by god they deserve higher sales. Problem is now is not really the best time to be trying to get momentum and marketing is a huge issue because if you use the hyundai method you look desperate. That marketing works for an up and comer but not for an established brand like Ford. Holden have the 'australian bogan' angle tied up and the cardigans are all over with Toyota (and its very insulting.....go your own way anti ford/holden advertsiting).

We just have to stay the course and in time the product will get word of mouth going and we should be ok. The Fiesta is a classic case....yes 780 odd sales is not great but it used to be 300-400 sales of the old model and i haven't seen diddly advertising of the car since it first launched.

Holden are pumping hard, they sponsor the ant and becks benchwarmers show on SeaFM here..all i hear is, the benchwarmers sound better in the new Holden ute with SIDI blah blah blah...pretty good advertising.

Me neither.

They've replaced Astra and Viva with Cruze and it's not selling any more volume than those two combined.

2008 : 1786 (Astra,Astra Convertible,Viva)
2009 : 1512 (Astra,Astra Convertible,Viva,Cruze)

It may have only increased by 1, but while nearly every other model decreased. So not a bad feat really.

Ford also had a week of shutdown in September, so the numbers aren't bad, but maybe it was too late in the month for it to really effect sales. Maybe a little bit of a reduction, which will carry over into next month probably.
