no, a dead box doesn't necessarily trigger limp home mode, especially if 3rd is gone!!
also your box is dead.

Limp home mode is 3rd. Black/brown is not a good colour for trans fluid. Red or reddy brown is what you want.

ITS WORKING
Was in limp home mode Because the oil pressure switch was buggerd, it was telling the ecu not to allow it out of second gear, hence the reason for slipping out

yeah
we used to do the wreckers trick with the cabs more often than not the box would play up within a week and even when they did last, 80,000klms was considered a 'good run'. cost in time and general stuffing around made us just write off wreckers boxes as a joke cos for $1300 you can get a proper box rebuild that time and time again would last for at least 370k, if not more like 440k.

i put 2 full bottles of oil in, 4 litres, equals eight, took it for a drive, no 3rd or 4th, went and bought another bottle, only could fit in another half a litre, and this was going throught the process, like, p/r/d/n, then agian,
Took it for a drive and nothing You have to be doing 110 to get it to go into 3rd gear

Just doesnt want to go in 3rd or 4th, dosent even want to do it manualy, strange thing is, it goes into, P<R<N<D but takes a very slow process to go in,
Theres no leaks or anything of the sort When we pulled the pan off, it didnt look healthy at all, was very very black, so i am making a guess, seeing though it came out of a 98 fairmont, its either never had a service or its been used for towing

The problem is, you have just filled it up with 8 L of fluid. With topping it up, you have effectively contaminated the new fluid with the old, and the reactions between different fluids, as you can see, can be pretty much catastrophic.
If you get another box, get it properly flushed and serviced by a trans shop, spend the huge $300, and they will 1: be able to tell you the condition of the box, as you are no expert, and really dont know what a bad box will look like. And 2: leave you with a freshly serviced and fully flushed box to put in your car. If you try and do things the cheap way, your going to loose out in the long run. IFirst thing I do when getting parts off any car at the wreckers is check that everything has decent used, or freshish oil it, if it doesnt, I dont pull parts off it, as they obviously dont care about the car. Spend the money, get it done properly.

frd906 - just get it done properly. It will be the most hassle free amount of money you have spent. While the trans dudes are doing your car, you can earn the extra in overtime to pay for it.
