it wont effect performance, fuel econ / idle etc would be very minimal.
it is however, highly illegal, and carries a 10,000$ fine. So to answer your question, YES, its cheaper to spend a few hundred than cop that fine, and therefor worth the purchase.

It will have an effect on noise and the smell that comes out of the pipes.

It will affect your wallet when you get caught, may be having an impact on your car too as everything is designed and tuned around having them fitted

Don't risk the fine if you get caught. Buy some new ones.

What does the exhaust fumes smell like when the cats have broken? Rotten egg gas by any chance?

Hollowed cats are illegal because of regualtions on pollution. Now with that out of the way..your car can gain decent power without them if tuned for offroad use cars. In saying that the ego sensors will have a harder time reading air fuel ratios at idle mostly because it will think the engine is leaner and will likely make the ecu run richer untuned.
