Today Ford Motor Company announced that the 2012 Ford Explorer with EcoBoost would be rated at 28 MPG highway. The Explorer will mark the first North American application of Ford's new 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder.

The new four-cylinder allows the Explorer to be the most fuel efficient large crossover on the market, besting the Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chevrolet Traverse by three or more miles per-gallon.

Now launching in the Explorer, this advanced EcoBoost four-cylinder engine provides the optimum balance between fuel efficiency and responsive power, delivering 240 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and a generous 270 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,000 rpm.

Ford’s new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine combines gasoline direct injection and turbocharging with smaller overall displacement, delivering comparable power to a standard V6 engine while delivering the fuel efficiency of a four-cylinder engine. Ford holds more than 125 patents on its EcoBoost engine technology.

EcoBoost is a global Ford strategy to provide affordable fuel efficiency for millions of drivers while also delivering the power they desire. EcoBoost will be offered on 90 percent of Ford nameplates by 2013.

The Explorer with its standard V6 delivers up to 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway to lead the full-size V6 SUV segment in fuel efficiency. The Explorer with EcoBoost continues this class-leading fuel efficiency momentum.
Wow, Ecoboost 2.0 Power is 179 KW and Torque is a whopping 365 nm.
The new Ecoboost Explorer is Territory size/weight so should drive pretty good.

If Falcon gets the same tune, it will leave the Omega 3.0 SIDI in its wake
with more torque and better fuel economy, bring on the "baby" Falcon....

that`s pretty good, nearly au xr6 vct torque , and it probably comes in earlier, should be a good goer .

At around 50 Kg lighter then the I-6, I think the EB 2.0 will be impressive, performance should be neck and neck

So 28mpg works out to be 8.4 l/100.

Impressive. Should get sub 8 per 100 in a Falcon.

That will move the Falcon nicely.

For the green fleets. CO2 will drop from 236g/km (9.9L/100km) in the NA 4.0 to ~190g/km (~8.0L/100km) with the EcoBoost.

For comparison's sake. The number 1 selling car in Australia, the 2011 Mazda 3 with 5spd auto is 193g/km. This has 108kW/182Nm.

Let's hope this breaks a few long held mistaken beliefs that the Falcon still remains a big, thirsty car,
Ecoboost 2.0 will show an entirely new group of buyers that they can have their cake and eat it too,
all the room and performance of an I-6 Falcon but with much better fuel economy and hopefully,
this will leave Holden gasping, what will they do to counter, an I-4 turbo, 3.0 V6 diesel?
Every option seems a bridge too far.....

GM Holden could fit the Commodore with the 1.4T from the Cruze... 103kW/200Nm...

i doubt that GM would do it straight off the bat, i suspect they will wait and see if the falcon sales look promising with the 4 banger.

Great engines and all but Ford need to put them in cars that the Australian public want and will buy or at least offer what the public want.

Look at the VE for example, on paper it has been mechanically inferior to the FG since 2008 but still outsells the FG 2 to 1.

Well I got the joke Phil......

I think Holden will try e-Start, their passive hybrid technology coupled to 8-speed auto
but really, I think Ford have come up with an elegant answer, some are skeptical but
I think the thrifty Ecoboost 2.0 will win a lot of new friends who still prefer petrol over LPG.

unless holden releases the 2.8 V6 turbo Direct injection, which has about 225kw, and 400nm and about the same or slightly better fuel economy then this ford engine.

i think at this stage the holden turbo engine is more likely to appear and be successful then fords, as ford seamingly want falcon to fail as they do not promote the car even 1/10th of what holden promotes the commodore.

By the way, i think it was MOTOR of Wheels magazine that said the holden 2.8 V6 DI was likely to go ahead (i think in 2014). the specs and economy of that motor, ford would need to counter with something better then the 2.0 turbo 4 duractec

Yeah they will spend millions certifying an engine to fail on purpose to sink a model. How is Elvis anyway?

They have had the chance to use the 2.8 turbo V6 for years, they have been building them for export since 2006. If they wanted to use it they would have done it by now. I don't subscribe to the theory it will be used in 2014. I don't think it will improve on the economy of the 3 litre much at all.
