Default Bye Bye Whitey

Well today's the day....
Our 1992 EB Fairmont, 'Whitey', is being picked up by its new owner. We've owned the EB since brand new and it has been a fantastic car, and is still running perfectly today. I will be sad to see it go, it's one of the most comfortable cars to sit in in my opinion, it's great to drive, it looks good and has given us trouble free motoring for the past 20 years. The interior has held up remarkably well, even though it was subjected to ferrying kids to and from school for a fair chunk of it's life. It's been a very faithful beast.
I'm gonna miss it...

Anyway, that's my little rant and opinion on EB's. I think somewhere down the track, I'll get another one, and who knows, maybe I'll find Whitey!

I suppose I'll give some sort of topic to the thread...

Has anyone else been sad to see there car of a long period of time be taken away? Or am I just a big sook?

I had a 1985 Land Cruiser Diesel that I dearly loved. Had it for over 9 years (I was 29 when I sold it), but in the end I grew tired of hauling around a heavy car. Thought I'd be really up set but just gave the guy the keys and said enjoy.

I think if I had used it to go camping and taking the kids around it would hold quite a lot of memories, but it didn't. Strange though cause I loved the old girl, but I wanted another BA Falcon.

Maybe were both sooks haha. I miss our old AUII wagon! If i see it id buy it back on the spot! Why? Lots of sentimental value..and its the perfect car for me..reliable, tough, comfy as, could sleep in it, perfect country cruiser, great for road trips, looks great in Burgundy..and i wanna do that RTV conversion ive always wanted to do on an AUII
Love the AUII wags...you can guess what the next stablemate to the Courier will be.

Wonder if one could track it down?

We sold the AU XR6 VCT nearly 12 months ago. That was a fantastic car!

It was the first car my wife and I bought together, the car our kids came home from hospital in too. We had it for 6 years and 100,000kms and was completely reliable, very enjoyable (roadholding was excellent), low maintenance, great on the road trips with excellent economy and looked terrific.

I've had a Commodore, a Mitsu Galant, 92 & 94 Nissans and 3 Falcons (AU, AU2, FG) and a couple of motorbikes. The Falcons have all been the best cars to drive and the most reliable. Which is why we still have two of them right now. Of those cars sold, it really is ONLY the red AU XR which i miss.

I still miss it.

Bought with 50,000km at 6 years old, our first proper family car, bought home a child in it. So comfortable, seats were fantastic just like your EB, so solid compared to Dad's VR, so torquey, ate long trips, had the best mag wheels Ford did in the 1990's on it. Reliable. I used to love listening to it idle. Sold at 100,000 when I should have paid a bit extra and maintained it.

An other I regret is a white XW Fairmont Wagon, 302 column shift, saddle trim. What a beautiful car.

Next one will be current Territory, unless I keep it...

It might sound crazy but as much as they get a bad rep, theres just something about EB's that I really love.
After owning my first car, an EB Fairmont for over 5 years, I recently bought an AU as my new daily. Sure Ive had my fair share of issues with the EB (many of them self-inflicted), but overall it has been great value, quite reliable and a hell of alot of fun.
Compared to the AU its slower, more thirsty, doesnt sound or handle as good, is much less refined, it squeaks and rattles and has alot of wind and road noise, but I still bloody love that car and drive it every chance I get.
Dont get me wrong the AU is a fantastic car, but I dont know if Ill ever have the same sort of connection with it as I do with the ol' EB.
Not sure what the plans are for it, but buggered if I can bring myself to sell it.

Agree on comfort for e-series. As someone who sits in all types of cars on a regular basis as part of my job, I have to say the EF Falcon footrest is one of the best because your ankle is supported by carpet (plush in my Fairmont).

So many other vehicles don't have that sort of comfort and support in my opinion.

And wtf is up with FG seats? XR ones feel like it's scrunched up pieces of newspapers instead of foam inside.

That's it boys, let it all out...
Today is the first time in a very long time that I have no choice of what car to drive. The 4Runner's too rusty for this rain, so it's dad's AU for a while!

On a side note, the bloke who picked up Whitey was really great. He's paying by doing carpentry work on my holiday house, but even so he gave us a thankyou card and a $100 restaurant voucher. That makes me a lot happier to let him go...

Nealy sold my XB wagon yrs ago but just couldn`t do it , too many memories so it`s parked up in a paddock growing rust awaiting that "one day I`ll do the ol girl up again", ( this WILL happen btw lol)

1) No airbags - kids lives are worth more than a car

THE SLUG: i like your whacked sense of humour, you remind me of me *tear*

i regret selling my 347ci EB Ghia, i agree the EB was a fantastic car. Comfortable, decent steering, handling was ok, tough looks. I let it go for WAY less than it was worth and i miss it the most. It's one of only two cars i miss, out of many.

Selling old faithfulls is hard - still miss my trusty old RTV. We spent a lot of time touring round Oz..just couldnt justify 3 regos and was space poor...I hope the bloke looks after it - after 250,000km was still as good as they day i picked it up...big internet man hugs mate!

When it was raining, the EB was not safe, especially with young kids in the car..
It would lose traction under the lightest acceleration, in very bad situations where you need to move off quickly...

Spending extra money on a 20 year old car worth $1800 isn't justified when we have 2 other cars to drive...
And how would one go about fixing the airbag problem?
