So I've been on the net all morning trying to answer my own question... finally given up and decided to start a new thread. I'm looking into getting some new shocks for the old au (series 2 non irs) and lowering it.
I am thinking of going SL height kings (or maybe SSL rears SL fronts, undecided yet) and finding it really hard to find a decent short shock to suit? I would love to go Konis and already have a price on them from one place but the second place I went to said because they aren't a short shock they would be stuffed in no time at SL height. I'm sure when I've been reading on here people have gone super low and had the Konis though? The only short shock option they gave me was the monroes :/ So, if the Konis aren't suitable (I'd really like to hear if people on here have had them work out fine with the lowered springs) who makes a half decent short shock that will work? Not including monroes that is... billys are a bit out of my price range... Sorry for starting another thread on a topic that's already got a load of threads going... Cheers |

ive got some ultima heavy duty lowered shocks in mine, put em in about 12 months ago, im quite happy with them.
running king sl's but the rear sits closer to ssl height. i would stick with the same height front and rear if i was u. i definately woulnt go lower in the rear as mine are lower anyway. |

I had Boge Short travel shocks in the back of my AU, they made a massive difference over the stock monroes I had in it, I noticed a massive difference.
P.S. The rear shocks are currently for sale with superlows :P

IMO KYB give the best bang for ya buck, they sell on ebay for a decent price.
The ride is not overly harsh and the control is excellent IMO.

Thanks for your input guys... so KYB and Boge are the best options? I have been looking at them on ebay and yeah they do go for pretty good prices. Has anyone run the konis with SL or SSL though? I really am keen on them ha ha.
With regards to having different springs in the front and the rear... it's really hard to decide because it seems to vary from car to car. Quote:

Ive got Ultima in the front of the wagon, does the job very well for the price. Just didnt seem to be THAT much of a short shock though.

Ahhhh it's so hard to decide! Eibach would be good as I could use Konis with them but I'm just not sure if it'd be low enough for me... anyways I'm grabbing the rear end stuff off cam, SLs and Boge, so I'll just grab some SLs for the front and some form of short strut to suit and see how that goes. I can't find any KYBs for the front on ebay, only rear end stuff. I will probably just go to some suspension places today and see what they offer. The amount of time I've spent on the net researching this stuff is ridiculous lol!

I'm really happy with the height, SSL definitely would've been too low I think. I haven't driven it much since I put all the gear on but it definitely turns in better. Steering seems a bit heavier too... Not necessarily a bad thing, just I'm used to it being REALLY light, going to take some getting used to. But all in all very happy wheels make it look 100% better I reckon ha ha.
Before pic... This was a while back when the fugly bulbar was on, but you get the idea |

I would be interested to hear your feedback after a few more KM in it!
Agreed on the heavy steering, when I went to my AU wagon (stock 16's) I was shocked how light the steering was!

Cheers Maka
Yeah I couldn't believe the difference in the steering, it's pretty massive. Ordered some new tyres for the back today so hopefully they come in this week (and I have time to take the car in ha ha) and I can get that done and an alignment, wheels balanced etc and take it for a spin Friday night. Should be good! |
