Default NSW rego plates and camera recognition

Hi all,

A mate of mine is looking at getting new rego plates as his are rather tired. He has heard that some colour combinations on the myplates.com.au website are harder for cameras to identify but isn't sure which ones if indeed any? He thinks it may be the silver on black or the white on black.

Does anyone KNOW if this is the case or not please?

Cheers and thanks in advance.
Geoff

If your mate's looking to break the law I wouldn't be offering him any help! I would think that the designers of these plates would have considered such a wild notion. The plates would quickly be removed from circulation or modified if these claims were true.

I do know what you mean - some are difficult to read by eye (especially if you are not straight in front or behind the plate). That being said I am pretty sure that if the cameras can't read them, the authorities wouldn't issue them.

If it is a number plate that has not been tampered with or altered in any way once you get it from RMS, you'd have nothing to worry about.

Doesnt matter, the lettering is usually matt finish and background reflective.

All cameras, whether flash or rego recognition on police vehicle be able to identify.

The black on black ones are probably a bit harder...

The other day I saw one the day that was a bit harder to read than some others.

I think it was black background with red font.

Of course I am not helping him break the law but if there's hint of legitimate minimisation why not take advantage of it. There has been a problem in the NT with a recall apparently http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-07-2...e-road/4837720

i heard the same thing, but can't remember what colours were hard to read.

also rumours were that the new AA-22-AA style were introduced because the camera's can read them easier

I work with a former RTA IT employee who was always at logger heads with the promotions department. Reality is that that the promotions department release new offerings, and the IT folk are forced to play catch up. Both are revenue and the IT folk catch up real quick, regardless of what the eye sees with those "unreadable" red lettering on a black plate are captured on camera. There is no escape.

The NT have just stopped making some coloured plates because camera's can't make out the rego number... They are writing to all the affected people and telling them to surrender them and have them replaced. Can't get in the way of revenue now, can we??

The answer must be Yes, quite surprising how many people get caught driving unregistered cars.

Ive got silver letters on black background, slimline plates. Hard to read on some angles but I wouldn't count on it.

Ive found the Red or Orange letters on a black background are very difficult to make out the characters using the naked eye but how they'd go with a camera I don't know.

The plates are all designed and made so the cameras can read them just fine.

The cameras use flash (either 'white' or IR) and the numbers come up just fine no matter the what the colour combination is.

ACT used to have a white on lime green plate, impossible to read in sunlight, but it came up perfectly in photos.

I'm pretty sure i've seen cars with the silver/grey background with white characters and that was almost indistinguishable unless you were right on said cars clacker. One would hope the cameras would not have trouble with it because the human eye you have no chance at a distance.

Saw a NSW car with black background/dark blue writing number plates today, and it wasnt up until you got within 10 meters you could actually see anything. I thought the car had blank plates at first.
It also had plate covers, the ones with the lines in them.
