Hey guys there's a big military auction starting on gray's online there's unimog's and landrovers starting from $9 dollars might get me a cheap unimog for camping always wanted one.

Yeah I seen that last nite! If I had a bush block or space to keep one of those I'd be interested but if the last auction is anything to go by, they won't stay cheap for long

they have been cycling through for months now, the prices are not great either seems there is a good market for them
would be cool to drive a unimog to work though

The cost of maintaining a Unimog would be huge. It would be cheaper to maintain a supercar.

What are Unimog's like to live with? I'd imagine being Milspec they'd be woeful to drive on normal roads.

Always thought unimogs were kool. I also reckon they would be pretty pricey to maintain. But the looks on peoples faces as you drove it around would be priceless.

That 6x6 Land Rover Ambulance would make a good basis for a camper project, provided you weren't fussed about going fast :

What do they need to comply for rego? They already meet ADRs right? They have a plate on the firewall I saw in one of the pics.

I heard the 6x6 ones are ***** as the turning circle is huge, engine is gutless and only offers marginal off road capability than the 4x4. Is this accurate?

no rocketships, they were huge
3.9 turbo isuzu diesel, 4 sp, full galv mofo of a chassis, locker diffs and PTO winch that could swing the whole truck from a big tree theres a defender dual cab 6x6 proto out there somewhere that lost its cam paint and ended up all shiny 2k white civvy styling |

compliance plate for landrover has 110 military on the top of the plate. It was built originally for military use only. These where produced they didn't meet ADR requirement for US normal people. that why they are good. Lot of these are being road regoed as is and most wont have problems. different storey if you want to use these for a business. as you may have to modify these for safety issues.
things like steering locks, ignition Key, door locks. they have none. Front bumpers have been modified with most vehicles. look at the front some have different bumpers. originals only have headlight guard loop and a number plate. One person told me they had to remove tools from bonnet and the rear seats. The army modified lots of these vehicles in service as they had to meet WHS stuff. fitted ROPS to the soft tops Etc etc. the 110 I looked at had a full roll cage fitted by the dealer. these supposed to be sold at 15yrs,1995. so most have been rebuilt through a rebuild facility. refurb. the 1989 model I watching has 74K of army reserve driver training. unimogs are heavy trucks so should be OK. Im told the MACK are overloaded on front axle for NSW-see these on road work sights. the intention of 6X6 wide cab was for a few ton payload off/on road with up to 5 ton trailer. the rear axle uses the power trailer drive that originally only allowed with 3rd diff locked because it uses the same vacuum button and it has long wheel base that's easy to hang up fuel tanks. turning circle similar to light trucks. horse power is 3.9 diesel with detuned turbo. gearbox is 4 speed. overdrive box was considered to expensive for 80Km/h transports. the are capable of 98 Km/h sitting at 4200 rpm. because the are fitted with low ratio diffs to allow idling in the bush.. civilian models often had 3.5:1 fitted to drop the hyway RPM.

the mogs need a MR licence to drive and are not to bad on the road but not really made for it the top speed is like 90 to 95kmph and can feel touchy with the steering at the high speeds.
off road they are great and go any where you want to take them. the rovers are also good off road but not great on roads as like the mog its top speed is 95 and the 6x6 are only meant to go 80kmph (can go faster) because of the nose they make if they go faster can damage your hearing after prolonged exposure. they are all good strong vehicle and would be fine but if you push them you can break things like any thing. also just cause they have low km don't mean that it hasn't been rebuilt before.

Pity the Landys didn't have 5 speed. Were they all Isuzu engines or did later ones have the Land Rover TD5 engine?

off track but if your after real off road camper look at mit canter workshop trucks. the RFS fire trucks I look after normally fully loaded with smaller engines just keep up to speed limits. so these machine shop body trucks are very good value.
the other recently was emergency response hino LWB 4X2 with next to no Km. $60-70K with generators and kitchens and beds. they sold with trailers to carry bobcats. School mate recently purchased US national guard 6X6 that had post GFC rebuilds. difficult to import so they are cheep.

civilian 110 have 5 speed. Army required lower top speeds and ability to operate without oil.
Isuzu 3.9. turbo version was fitted to loads of civilian models post sale.--because they exceeded the speed rating allowed under ADR. I seized a front diff on a pre delivery at 110 Kmh road test. talk of detuning the 110 mil spec because of early rollover deaths. the numbers of speeding 110 loaded on F3 didn't help. no seatbelts legs hanging out the sides. 6X6 had no sound proofing on the early builds. the turbo was IHI with no waiste gate and sounded like it was in the passenger seat.
