Chucked some king super low's on the back of my XR8 to try and remove the 4wd height...but it's only like 10mm lower max (needs another inch), it looks about 'low' height not super low. Left is standard springs and right is superlows...How low do super lows usually sit on an AU?

That looks far too high for super low's. They didn't give you the wrong springs did they? Have you gone for a drive to let them 'settle'?

Yeah part number checked out, it has SL at the end. That's after a drive so theyre not going to drop anymore unfortunately

If they where new springs, they will settle a bit more with use. Is that a 17" rim with a lower than standard profile? Having a small wheel diameter will definitely make it harder to fill the wheel arch.

There is a 17" version. I believe that they where on Fairmonts? I guess we will find out soon enough?

My old Au xr had to be lowered twice for this same reason. King spring sl did nothing in the rear, I had to use ssl to make it sit like I wanted to. So sl for front and ssl for rear on xr

Yeah theyre 18" rims off rebel/TS50, probably just look small cause its sitting too high! but looks like i'll have to go ultra lows then.
Maybe the upper shock mount makes the car drop down when it starts to break, mine seems pretty solid still.

I had the same springs in the rear of my xr8 and it started at that height and 12 months later the tyre is now level with the guard, so it sagged 2" in 12 months,

Bit of a late update! I got SL springs for the Front as well, which actually raised the front marginally, now it is roughly the same as the back with SSL. The SSL probably only dropped another 10mm or so over the picture of the SL.
Handling wise, it seems a little understeery. The SSl rear are quite a bit softer based on the specs that I found. 310-365lb progressive (King) vs 470lb fixed (Tickford). Now the interesting part is in the king catalogue, rear superlows are ACTUALLY SSL, unlike E-series. That might explain the heights of everything I've found! It still sits a bit high for my liking, my ED has superlows and it is a good 10mm lower. Seems like coilovers are the way to go eventually.

This is my XR8 on SL front and rears. I recently went back to Lows in the rear, but stuck with a progressive wound coil by Dobinson springs.

Funny, I put on some King Lows on my AU and they were *way too low* - way lower than your SL's. I ripped them out it just looked wrong. I'm suspect of King Springs and their quality control. I had the right part number, but they were obviously a different size. They were from ebay for what its worth - they may have been factory seconds, who knows?

Got Kings SLs all round on mine, Sat ok but lost some ride feel so have put the stock XR 8 ones back on the rear , ( still got the SLs in the shed if any one is interested Cheap lol )

Kings will always sag a lot,,they're just not a great quality Spring.
They're popular because they're cheap, and have a vast range. |
