Default adding a trans cooler...few Qs

i bought a trans cooler off ebay and im gonna fit it this weekend. i do have a couple of questions though. i can see where the pipes fit and everything but when i add it its gonna be empty/full of air. will this be a bad thing having the air go through the lines and into the box? or will the air just go where it has to and not effect anything. also since its second hand is there anything i can run though it or try and get in there to give it an internal clean.

just add about 500ml of trans fluid the air wil just work its way out of the system thats all I did

pour some fluid in one end, and hold your finger over it, then twist and turn the cooler to make it come out the other and check it all looks good.

if the cooler is BIG bypass the fluid from the radiator altogether

define big. my trans cooler is about 1 1/2 - 2 times bigger than factory. is this big enough to by pass it? ill get some measurements of it.

my cooler had nothing to do with the radiater, (3speed) it's still conected at the front i just cut the lines and crimped them.

I should pull it off and sell it.

Well i fit cooler all day every day (especially to BA's)and we bypass the radiator and use a coolers the size of an A4 piece of paper, and since half are cabs there effective, they come as a kit with 3/8 hose and have never had a problem with them, as for using a 2nd hand one i would be strongly against it but since you have already brought it i would suggest flushing the cooler out with K55 (or equivilent) solvent, then fitting it,


if anyone wants a cooler i can sell them to you for $144 plus frieght ( $13.20 over night almost anywhere in aust)

I agree with Cobalt.. hacksaw off the flared ends then file them smooth and remove the nuts on the factory cooler lines that plumb into the radiator.. Sit your new trans hose (the rubber stuff) in a mug of boiling water to soften them up and push them as far a possible over the factory steele lines.. Use two nicely spaced hose clamps on the end of that hose because it can leak sometimes because you removed the flare...THen just plumb up the front...

I'd give it a hit with some cheap aresol degreaser then blow thru it with some compressed air just incase they is some crud in there, even a blast with the servo air pumper-upper thing will cut it. Just let the degreaser evaporate fully before you fit it.

It is also not a bad idea to fit an inline filter to the hose inlet hose while you are at it.. It is suprising how much stuff it catches even after the trans magnets in the pan.

A4 sized is tiny Cobalt hahaha, I fit the monster A3 sized ones hehe

what kind of filter should i fit? its obviously gonna be different from say a fuel filter as trans fluid is more viscous.

also regarding a reply-less thread in the transmission forums, its off an eb and ive seen the exact same cooler on an EA. but when i looked at my ED it looked a bit different. there is heaps of shit in the way. did the coolers/mounts change from ea/eb to ed?

4 Speed Auto EA's (Series2) onwards got the Trans cooler as seen on EB, ED got a slightly larger one IIRC

Not standard they didn't. Only if you got a towpack fitted when the vehicle was purchased.
I don't understand why you would want to bypass the radiator cooler?
It's just as easy to get the correct fittings so you run it inline with the radiator - then you are pretty much safe from leaks, cause you will still have the flared ends on the pipes.

I think he means the 4 speed cooler is larger than the 3 speed one.

Because the tank splits and leaks water and coolant into your transmission destroying the friction bands and rendering the g/box good for the scrap heap. Add to the fact that an external air cooler is 10 times more efficent than running your oil beside something that is nearly at boiling point. Also the external trans cooler increase the volume of fluid in the system lowering the temperature even more...

sounds good i might get mine set up like that....
but i'd prefer to have a ridge on the lines where the hoses go on though......

would somewhere be able to do the ridges? like if i took the car there....

Yup... i wouldnt ran it threw the radiator cooler.. THey split and destroy autos buy filling it up with water.. and youre coolng system gets filled with oil 2....

some of the kits come complete with a female brass joiner to screw over the factory radiator inserts... The flare isn't that important if you get the hose on far enough.
