Just picked up a replacement 4 speed auto for the EB SeriesII Fairmont.
Any tricks to watch out for on changing the trans over? Hints? Seems fairly straightforward, get the back up high? Have been trying to find a thread to help out here but not luck so far. |

I usually pull engine and gearbox out, then swap the trans and put the engine and gearbox back in, it takes a solid day, but i feel it is way quicker then stuffing around under the car trying to line up a damn heavy gearbox with very little space to work in.

Ramps on the front, back up as high as possible.
Lots of bolts. You will need 2 jacks (one for each end of the trans) or a decent sized jack to lift the thing up and down. Dont forget to undo the torque conveter from the flywheel, or you will get very very wet. Set a new garage record for me 2 weeks ago. 2hrs and 11 mins for an auto trans swap. Dead one out, new one in. Working 100%. Its a pain working on your back, but I think a ton easier than having to pull the motor for no reason. |

Thanks Guys,
I won't be anywhere near the 2hrs, more like 2 days lol. only 4 bolts on the Torque Converter/ fly wheel? Does the electronics reset by itself after changeover? The present one is stuck in limp mode. |

yeah 4 17mm bolts, remove the front lower half of the shield on the gearbox to get to the bolts easier.
if the gearbox is actual reason limp home mode then yes as the battery will be disconnected to remove and replace the gearbox.

Yep... Only 4 bolts holding the flywheel to the torque converter.
You will have to disconnect the battery as the starter has to come off. Dont want the starter live wire to be touching metal things. Plus it will reset the ECU at the same time. If you have access to a rattle gun and compressor, it makes this job 100 times easier. And while you have the tranny out, pays to replace the rear main seal behind the flywheel. Its only $7 |

I agree with EA2BA: pull out the engine and trans to make things simpler. It might seem like it'll take a little longer, but it's better than stuffing about half the day under the car.

Already managed to drain the oil from the replacement box onto the backseat of my sons car. Not impressed with Dad.
Figured to have a go myself would also leave me with some useful gear, ramps, jacks etc. |
