Default Shocks for AU

I want to change my standard shocks, on my AU 2 XLS ute. Normally I would just go to Pedders, thought it might be better to ask people here. What would be a good replacement? Suspension is standard, stock ride height as I live in a rural area. Am also going to have shim type camber kit fitted, thanks fella's.

Got mine done at Pedders ... impressed with the ide quality and handling ... also have my springs done there ... I also have an AUII XLS ute.

Sports Ryder shocks have been great on rough roads as well ... there's still comfort with excellent road holding.

I've had bad Pedders experiences. I went with an all-Kings setup

Pedders shocks used to be made by Monroe - the Sprots Ryders are equiavlent to the Monroe Gas Reflex shocks. I have them (the Monroes) in both my wagon and in the XR, and they are OK. Nothing compared to the Konis I used to have, or the same King setup Mark has in his.

Thanks fella's, much appreciated. Has anyone heard of Ultima shocks? I have a quote on them & camber kit fitted, from Wholesale Suspension at Penrith, I am happy with the price, tempted to have them slip in a set of King springs in the front, while they are at it.

The bloke behind the counter, said "as good as Koni's without the price", didn't give me a price on them. Might give him a call, see what the price is. All I could find on Whiteline's website was for AU sedans, thanks for the input. As you can see, it is not a decision that I am taking lightly.

Speak with Matt Fisk from wholesale.. suspension is a big issue and a saftey issue..

Im strongly pushing you towards koni's, pedders may be ok, but ive had bad experiences with them more then once, and now ive got king springs + koni shocks, and they are terrific, I highly recommend them..

No worries, I know safety is important. I don't want to waste my "hard earned" on anything & find out later for a bit extra outlay, that I could have got a better product, thanks mate.

I've heard about people haven't bad experiences with Pedders before, but they were really, really good to me.

I only got the rears done, because the pump-up shocks I originally had didn't want to pump up anymore, and I don't carry loads very often, so they got the flick, and the Sports Ryders are much, much better. Nice ride, behaves a little differently when cornering too.

I'd recommend them if you're on a budget (like me).

: yer I'm sure the price is nice......
Ultima made in china ! one day will be ok but very average for now, their best feature is price and what isn't coming from china.
Go around many spare parts shops and see what they stock of the stuff ? bet you find find many.
Get a tried and proven brand which doesn't cost much more anyway.

Thanks fella's, thought that may be the case. I've held off purposely, will have a chat with them tomorrow about koni's, from what I'm hearing Pedders might be made there now as well, build quality not the same as it was. Anyone with Pedders gear, check for leaks on your shocks. Not wanting to cause a hassle, but other people who have used them before, now having issues, where as before, not a problem.

The missus used to wn a EF with the full pedders kit in it and now since the AU shocks are rooted i rang pedders up $785 just to supply shocks so i Rang Mark at Wholesale where i got the camber kit and the springs done and its going to cost me $720 to drive and drive out with new shocks.

Amazing how some companies like to treat their customers in Sydney id recommened Wholesale suspension at Penrith Anyday they crpa over that NO BULL crowd.

Pedders shocks are made to their specs by Monroe in Adelaide, still good gear no matter some problems ppl have had, thats for all products !
The only reason ppl harp about Pedders more is because they up sell too much, thats fine you can always say No !
Bang for buck their gear is pretty fair for performance, the next scale costs much more ie Bilstein,Koni,Spax etcetc
As for customer service Krusty please don't tar and feather the whole organisation because of maybe being served by someone that had maybe a "attitude issue or didn't come across well to you" because I know many of them which go far beyond the customers needs !
Anyway back on topic and no stress mate and that's No Bull lol.........

Casper this is a grey area due to many uniformed opinions !
Best value is really how much you can afford lol.....but here is my unbiased not too technical opinion.

The "Name Brands" Monroe,Gabriel and KYB for example are best value as you asked, they are volume produced products for the day to day vehicle ( I knewof one factory could do 45,000 units on a 24hr shift), the valving (compression/Rebound) is slightly uprated above OE specs, if they were firmer average joe wouldn't buy them. These companys do OE business and the above are their aftermarket brands.
They do the job ok but in a lowered car they are working above their design capabilities, not matched in valving to the Heavy Duty low spring unless it is a specifically designed lowered strut/shock.

Next would be Pedders, although made by Monroe and Gabriel they cannot be the same as the makers brand. Pedders have their own RD facility with Techs testing product everday, on the road and on the dyno, they pay a higher price for the extras they want therefore a higher Retail price. This is why ppl scoof at there prices comparing to Monroe/Gabriel etc but they Are a higher spec.

Koni's,Billy's,Spax and many botique brands are obviously much more expensive, most are hand made, highest quality components and therefore very low volume compared to the others above, hence a Premium Price.

As the saying goes "You get what you pay For"
Now in saying that many go the cheaper option, it has a failure the customer goes "off" go figure....lol.....

Bluedriver I owned a VH SLE 308 had the full kit done by pedders and had nothing but issues hench why i got rid of the car.
Why didnt the ARC team use the companys products instead of bilstein if its meant to be that great :alien2:

The price i got quoted was due to club discount not being a tightass like you think most of us are and its funny how some well known suspension places i have contacted in the last few days are steering away from the family cars and going more towards the Ricers.

1. VHSLE nice car, I had 2 thanks to the first being stolen, they were Pedderised, dumped and not a issue but in saying that all products have their "issues" from time to time. Nothing is perfect but I'm a firm believer in "never say never" after my own experiences I bought another Ford :nutsycuck but I love my AUXR.
2. The ARCPedders sponsered team now retired. Come on ? Now you are not comparing "apples with apples" without getting into the "facts" that's like saying why don't Ford/Holden use their shocks/suspension for Supercars.
3. As for the quote "tightass's etc" if you read it that way I'm sorry mate don't be so sensative. Did I single you out ? Don't think so.
4. As for suspension places doing more Ricers/lowering jobs etc ? Bloody oath it's not new but the average car is their bread and butter so is the local panel beaters feeding them wheel alignments/corrections and the local trade etc.
5. py: Peace man

6. JC, my background is Brake and Suspension, worked in a few known companys through my days and now my own business provides a service to their Head Offices :
