Default POS Random Short Out Causing Fire!!

ai guys

im gettting REALLLLY sick and tired of my car, REAL TIRED...

ok, all is fine, perfect, a friends running low on oil , f/e he checks it, hes down heaps, no dramas, he goes down n buys some top up oil from the servo, no biggie, as were ready to leave, i jump in mine, (no problems) drive out to the drive way, take the driveway REAL slow coz we put ultras in and my GT bumper is 82mm from the ground (we measured it)...

next thing u no im taking the driveway and car turns off and headlights turn off everythign turns off, ripp the handbrake up mate gets out and says theres smoke comin from the bonnet, i pop the bonnet open it, and b4 i opened it smoke was POARING out from everywere, open the bonnet and damn smokes poaring EVERYWERE, and i see a fire glowing on the battery, friend runs to get a fire extingusher, but fire puts its self out and its jsut smoking, ...

now after the smoke dissaprears we asses the damage, somethign shorted or some crap and all i know is the red wire going to the starter motor is Cooked, it eventually got really hot and melted?, the battery then caused a short circuit and fried and caused a little fire, and the lead that goes to the engine mount or woteva is also cooked, couldnt see much else but some weird crap has happenend and it could only happen to me in this bloody thing.

in the moarning gonan check it out proply, hope theres no more damage, or nething, atm its under the car port bonnet up with everythin unplugged from the battery (well cooked and sittting away from the battery etc)

damn, was a good friday night at one stage...

Is your battery sercured in propperly? sounds like both terminals have hit the bonnet and arked out. Just a thought anyway. Good luck with sorting it out.

ur car is a beautiful machine grechie. do you have those rubber cover things that go over the terminals? This would have prevented the arking

lol grech, not havin a good run with this car latly huh, id say the + wire shorted somewere underneath the motor, have a look were it runs and try find som arc marks on the body, and obviously you have to replace that wire, make it fatter gauge, and double insulate it.

when you see the way some guys do things in such a slacko way and don't think its important to put bolts back in, such as a battery clamp, or do wiring mods with wires running everywhere, it's no wonder things go wrong.

Don't blame the car, blame the slacko who did n't do something properly

You said the cables themselves were fried?

It wouldn't be the battery terminals shorting on the bonnet then would it?

lol

The starter +12v went along the crossmember and up to the starter from memory, I'm guessing the insulation was damaged somewhere and it has shorted out.

Those are big cables, they can carry huge amounts of current and would easily create enough heat for a fire.

yea found out the clutch cable jammed the postive wire against the cross member, which created the problem, all fixed now, thank god

Glad to see you got it sussed.

Speaking of fires, my wifes EF Ghia caught fire in the driveway the other day. The ignition barrel burst, started shorting, let the smoke out & I took to the battery with a pair of bolt cutters! Should be back on the road this week with a whole new loom & barrel!
