Powdercoat wheels?

Hey guys

I bought a set of 17X7 wheels for my zetec last week. The problem is they are powdercoated white which is very hard to keep clean. the brake dust just sticks to the wheels and wont come off even if i wipe them. I have to wash them with soap all the time

I am thinking of powdercoating them again to silver or chrome them. Which do u think is the best to maintain? Anyone in melbourne know of a place I can get them powdercoated or chromed?....How much do u think its gonna cost me?

Chrome would be just as hard to keep clean,silver is to standard .
Powdercoat them matt black or black.

id just restore them to the Original Color. they look really good and they dont seem to show up the Brake dust as mcuh.

There is special wheel chrome paint you can buy to paint wheels, i was going to do it on my old car, variety of colours too.

What you can do is take the wheels off and give them a real good clean. Then... apply this tuff called wheel wax.

Give it a few coatings since the wheels are off.

This will help as the junk wont stick to the wheels and they will clean heaps easier.

You can also go even more hardcore and put Nano Seal on them.... but if you had that lying about you prob already would of known about Wheel Wax.

Wheel Wax is just like the wax you put on your car but can handle higher temps, thus not melting off.

Its worth a try if you like the wheels in the colour they are now.

I do like them white. But when I tried to clean them with special Brake dust cleaning stuff, it has taken away the clear coat and now brake dust has eaten into the paint. So theres no going back

Cant paint it black coz my focus is black as well.

I knew about the wheel wax marshy but cudnt find it anywhere in the market.

Fortunately I have a huge sandblaster/shot peener at work with which I can strip the paint off neat. I am looking for some place in Melbourne where they can paint it exactly as the original colour they came in. Gotta be relatively cheap too.

Anyone got a very rough idea how much its gonna cost me?....I guess I can spend upto 50-60 bucks a wheel. thats it.

you used something that ate the clear coat off? Hmm must of been some harsh **** stuff.

For any car detilaing questions I'm on a forum with heaps of experts (the guy is a professional detailer here in melbourne and a top guy).... you can also buy products off him including wheel wax. Only supplies the best stuff that he has tested himself.

Just a tip for the rest of you guys after anything you cant find like wheel wax.

You know what I think would look mad on a black foci? A nice deep red set of rims. Make it into a demon car. Yeah baby.

Otherwise gold is usually good. Depending on the car and brightness of the gold really.

As for repairs... have you tried Advanced Wheel Repair in Moorabin? The general consensous is they are the kick **** place to get rims fixed in Melb.

I'm actually about to get a quote on a set of 17" ST170 alloys for repair and repainting from the guys at Coburg, so sit tight and I'll let you know their price. I am aiming to get a few quotes, don't want to pay too much. Perfect timing!

I too am aiming for no more than $75 per wheel for sandblasting and repainting.

Looks like you bought that set off Ebay?

Spoke to Mag wheel center in richmond

Quotes $60 for paint stripping and $188 for factory silver colour. And thats per wheel guys. Holy macaroni!!!!. And they are not too happy with the stripping done somewhere else. Thats a grand for four wheels.
I dunno if anyone will go for it, when they can buy a set of new wheels cheaper

Hmm a claybar should of been able to remove the brake dust off the rims to start with... but oh well.

yeh the quote for my ST170 rims for repair and painting was $200 per wheel........still thinking about it.

Got another quote from donnelians in oakleigh. $100 bucks for a wheel. That includes stripping and painting. That sounds a lot better. Dunno how good they r though. Im gonna give it a shot anyway.

Im going to another place 2moro morning. Its a place referred to by a frd of my gf. So mite work out even cheaper. Might even do it w/o a receipt saving gst.

k the new place wasnt too cheap. 150 after i sandblast them myself per wheel. But seems like thay know what they r talking abt. so the work shud b good

Are power coated wheels less likely/harder to chip than paited ones? Mine where painted by a mate for free, now they have afew chips. Is power coating able to be done as easy? Does anyone know what is needed?

Its powder coating mate, and im not to sure but i think you need some proper painting equipment to do it.....also i thought wheels were always powder coated so maybe he did that when he painted them......not 100% though

I guess powdercoat will resist chipping better than paint. Anyway powdercoating is just another way of applying paint.

But since they are baked they tend to be much more durable. otherwise they exhibit pretty much the same qualities as paint. Mind you, powdercoating is more expensive than just spraying paint

VIP have the stuff to clean them. just done mine and they had 2yrs of baked on grime and dust. will pm you their details.

A Class Powdercoating, they are in moorabin, ask to speak to baz jnr. He does a top job and he's good on the $$$ too. He used to do rims for larry perkins motorsport so he knows how to get them looking good.

I think "powder coating" is a bit more detailed than painting???

I watched some steel getting powdercoated and the gun had minimal pressure, certainly nothing like a spray gun or pressure pack. Also i think the actual paint is magnetised in some way and is "attracted" to the steel via some sort of electrical / magnetic charge. The paint flowed out as a powder and then changed paths and got drawn onto the object being painted, it looked wierd as you assume the paint will flow out at a certain angle and maintain that angle.

So would that then mean that Mag/allow wheels cannot actually be powder coated as they are not steel and therefore not able to be magnetised???

I could be wrong however???

I got a few steel wheels painted. I too got a quote for spray paint only, $500 for 4 wheels (the wheels themselves cost me $400 to get made up) haaaaa...

I ended up cleaning em up myself at home, spraying em with pressure pack undercoat and took em down to the local panel shop just to get the bright metallic silver paint and clear coat put on. they charged 30 bucks a wheel and looked great.

Very true, the powdered paint is attracted to the metal part as it has a charge put through it. This minimises waste, the paint is then baked on to form a more durable than standard spray painted finish

Powdercoating can be done on most materials. Even on some plastic materials.

steps, Clean (solvent), Powercoat (needs static) bake for 40 mins up a max temp of 250, then all done.
