OK. I really want to buy this EL Fairmont Ghia. However the guy ive been emailing stopped emailing me whenb i said id give him 7,500 for it. I am looking for the master of the haggling. I know its a big ask but this car is the one, i would love it if someone could do me a massive massive massive favour in ringing this bloke up and haggling the **** out of him. Ive tried it and didnt work. I think someone with good knowlege about these cars would be able to do the job, for the guys trying to sell the car doesnt sound like he knows a GREAT deal about them at all...
Well let me know if anyone has a dip, id love it to get down to 7,000. Even if heaps f people call up having a go and saying its 7,000 will help. Because then ill re ring him and make an offer of 7,500 -8,000 and hell think well all the other offers were 7,000. ********removed by Laminge, Not acceptable on these forums ********** This is the Car. http://www.autotrader.com.au/search-...ubs_Used+Cars_ White 1997 Fairmont Ghia Pictured.(one with a pic) Last edited by Laminge; 20-12-2006 at 05:38 PM. |

it is simple mate.. 200000 klms but you have $7500 CASH to spend, available to pick up immediately if the 'other' Fairmont you are looking at falls thru... If you don't have the cash money burning a hole in your pocket, don't expect a car yard to bend over getting you sorted for $3500 less than list price..
Getting someone else to do it is not cricket dude.. Your car, your money, your time!

Dont buy that car. Go private and you will save. I got my Ghia down from 7000 to 6200 because I offered cash straight up, always works well. If you do get it, change that god awful grill. If he is of a certain nationality, the wave the cash and he will fold.

Think of a quote from the movie "The Castle". Either way his stuffed because he has obviously annoyed the guy, so theres not point continuing it. If you are going to buy a second hand car thats sub $10k then IMO there is no point going to a dealer, you will just get bent over.

Also, because you've insulted the poor bloke, he definately won't do business with you now. Afraid you've dug your own hole here, time to move on.

Mate..... let it die.
You've shown your hand and he is in control now not you. It looks like a POS anyway with the fairlane grill and the <sic> front bar. If you want to haggle with a car yard you never give them a price. You sit there and point out every little problem/issue you can find... A/C not overly cold.... might need a compressor. (common on EF/EL's) Head leak..... well we all know the go there. Gearbox.... did you hear that noise.... might need a rebuild. Tyres - Radiator - Belts - any Panel damage..... Let them come down to a price.... say from $11,000 they then say you can have it for $9,000. You'd say cool, that will cover the cost of the head gasket.... what about the rest? Then you make sure they know you've looked else where. (alway take someone else to talk to) Ask your mate... So what do you think?? Is it worth the $1500 more than the Blue one we just looked at? (and make sure the saleman hears it) Carry a pad and pen. Write down all the cars details, make sure the salesman sees you doing it and that he can see other cars listed on there too. It's not hard... you might not have got as low as $7500 but I think you'd have got close if you approached it the right way. D

Dave23, let me put it like this. In life there are many lessons that we learn, some easy, some the hard way. From your first post in this thread I’m sure that you are Destined to learn things the hard way. I could go on for quite a while, however, I’m not sure how you will accept constructive criticism.
I will say one thing though. You will attract more flies with honey than s**t.

What goes around comes around 10 fold - don't go playing the smart a*se by getting other people to do your dirty work.
If you want the car that badly go and see it, state your offer and take it from there. If he accepts its yours, if not move on. |

Prob disagree with a few of the comments in here.
There's nothing wrong with lowballing someone - especially if you're talking cash money. But it's how you go about it. This is a business transaction, so no one should be taking anything personally. See DJL's post. Also remember that you shouldnt be too suprised if you have to come up as much as he is willing to come down. By the sounds of it, this guy isnt too keen to play the game. You've gotta pick your battles... What you are proposing by having people ring up and offer $7k actually sounds like fraud to me.

That is one ugly car.
And yes, what you are planning to do is very dodgy re the law, when it comes to people ringing up and offering a lower price. And also, if you think he would be fooled by that, think again. He probably just isnt taking you too seriously or is just waiting for you to settle down and be sensible. Try for the lowest price, for sure. Just play fair, thats all, or at least within acceptable limits. It is a bit scary that you would come on here and ask perfect strangers to do this for you!!! You wont learn how to do it until you do it... haggling takes practice. Now... go find a nice car and try and get it for a decent price while still being reasonable... and good luck!

LOL my mate does the same thing when he buys a car, offers the guy a lower price and it’s refused.
Then get his Dad, Sister, Cosen uncle and a few friends to ring up and offer even lower prices over the next 2 or so days then calls back and all of a sudden his offer looks a lot more attractive, LOL |

How has this thread even survived this long?
Wrong, wrong wrong.. this is unethical and just plain crooked. AFF would never condone this sort of action at all... and neither would I.
