Default Pod V Panel filter

I've got the K&N Panel filter and it is all good.. But I was just looking at the AU Bible (for the uneducated AuFalcon.com) and saw the pod filter article in the workshop and also I noticed Casper had the pod in his aswell...

What is the advantages/disadvantages of both filters

Seriously, I doubt it is a huge advantage to be honest. I got the pod as part of the Dev1 kit and I am very happy with it but I doubt its worth more than a few kw if any at all. Induction noise sounds awesome though!

Cool,, so many things to think about.. and it gets worse when I can't watch the tele cause the Mrs and her friend are watch the 6th series of Sex in the City. Back to Back i have to add... All I want to do is play GT4 on the playstation..

Cubey - you need a screen in the XR, so you can go and Play PS2 in the back seat.

I have gone from standard filter, to panel, to pod, to BMC CDA setup, and back to pod in the air box. The only one that made any real difference was the BMC - In the 8, I reckon it's worth at least 5 or so rwkw, and heaps better throttle response, not to mention better economy (worth around 30kms per tank).

So...if you have a K&N panel at the moment, keep it, and replace the plastic tube going from the air box to the bendy tube with a 3" metal pipe. That does make a noticeable difference on the 6's - more so on throttle response than overall power. But it's a cheap mod! See attached pic - it's the piece of chrome pipe about 1.5 feet long going to the airbox.


If you want the BMC CDA - I have one for sale (pic below)!

I paid too much for it. You should be able to get some from an exhaust shop for around $50 - $80 - then just paint it black. Mine is now black, as black looks stock.

nah, its not professional, it needs another paint job too. Still, as you say, it does the trick and is well worth it.

mik - do you mean the snorkel thing on the radiator support panel? If so, then yes, it's the T series/AU3 XR8 one.

They even welded braces on to hold it in place.. Is steel the other guy at the shop rekon aluminum would have been the way to go.. Any thoughts

Cubey - you move fast! Steel is fine. $50 is great, but the bracket looks crap. Maybe if you paint it, it might blend in a bit better?

I'm wanting to change my CAI system on my Pursuit and after looking at this thread I am wondering if it is worth spending around $550 on a G&D or AWC setup, or just going with something like you have. Is the setup you are using here an option for me? I know I would have to get a different airbox (I have a conical one) but even then wouldn't it be cheaper for similar gains.

That was what I thought aswell, If Im still not too happy will prolly just weld or grind it off... How does yours stay in place?

Got my DEV Hi Flow Kit in over the weekend. I'll post up a pic of it tomorrow. I must get some Zip Ties or something like that to hold the metal pipe still, it rattles inside the car.

I think the best result from a pod is the awesome induction noise that you get. Other than that it doesnt make that much of a difference.

JC, why does the pipe make the difference. Faster and smoother air flow, or more turbulent or......?

Is it worth doing on my I6? It's on gas!

I dont think there is any difference betweent the panel and pod filters. I use the K&N and it ain't holding the engine back yet. I have gone a different way from the pics posted above, I had the 3" pipe keep going around to my TB.

Marty - don't change from the conical filter - it is one of the better ones that Ford fitted as standard.

jonbays - the pipe fronm the airbox starts at 55mm and works it's way out to approx 75mm at the elbow and stays roughly that size all the way to the TB. By replacing the section between the box and the elbow, you are making the whole lot 75mm.

Not sure if it would benefit a Gas car, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

BD - The only filter that's made a difference to my XR8 is the BMC one. And I am not just saying that because I happen to have one for sale: Can't tell you exact rwkw, but now that I don't have it on the XR, I am getting worse economy and missing some light throttle response - I'm having to floor it to get anywhere!

So what do you recommend to get the air to the filter better, as I imagine the engine would be sucking the air in from its current location in behind the guard?

Once I start getting some good air to the filter I'll change from the stocko paper filter to a BMC or K&N.
